      Stephen Hales, DD. FRS. (–) (Fig 1) was an eighteenth-century experimental physiologist. Like Fr. Thomas Linacre (c. –), Fr. Gabriele Falloppio (–62), Reverend Gilbert White FRS (), and many other priests, he was a well-educated amateur, probably of independent means, who although he devoted much of his life to religion and public service, pioneered experiments.
