Castle Campbell is an imposing tower house nestled between the Burn of Care and the Burn of Sorrow as they tumble down from the Ochils. The early history of the castle is not known in any detail, however it appears to have originally started off as a motte, still visible under the later tower, which would suggest a possible 12th century origin, with a name variously spelled as Gloom, Gloome or. Castle Campbell sits in a commanding and strategic location at the top of Dollar Glen overlooking the town of Dollar to the south. It is possible that the grassy hill on which the castle is the remains of an earlier wooden motte and bailey castle. Castle Campbell is a medieval castle situated above the town of Dollar, Clackmannanshire, in central Scotland. It was the lowland seat of the earls and dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell, from the 15th to the 19th century, and was visited by Mary, Queen of Scots, in the 16th century.

Castle Campbell which is situated in Dollar Glen close to Dollar in Clackmannanshire. It was originally named Castle Gloom but was changed to Campbell in by Act of Parliament with the approval of King James IV. The word Gloom was probably from the Gaelic glom meaning a chasm.

As you can see it was a gorgeous blue sky day when we visited. Castle Campbell was once the home of the powerful Campbell earls of Argyll, and has connections with historical figures such as John Knox and Mary Queen of Scots.
