Ancient Book of Jasher: A Commentary. by Ken Johnson. The Book of Jasher is one of thirteen ancient history books that are mentioned in the Bible. It is referenced in Joshua, II Samuel and II Timothy and claims to be around the same age as Genesis and Exodus, recording the first 2, years of history. the book of jasher this is the book of the generations of man whom god created upon the earth on the day when the lord god made heaven and earth.

The Book of Jasher is mentioned in Joshua chapter 10 and 2 Samuel chapter 1 and it was extant when Jamnia convened. Therefore it was important to bring it into conformity with rabbinic tradition and their decisions about the Torah. Indeed, many long-held extra-Biblical rabbinic traditions are rooted in the Book of Jasher. The short answer is that we don’t have the Book of Jasher in our Bibles because the book has never been discovered. There are two books called the Book of Jasher in existence today, one is a forgery from the 18th century that claims to be the lost book and the other a Hebrew midrash from the 16th century.

This particular one is a translation of a Hebrew book printed in Sepir Ha Yasher, the Book of Jasher book title of this book, means the 'Book of the Upright', or 'the Upright or Correct Record'.

This title was misread as 'Jasher', and at some point Jasher was treated as a proper name; however the pronoun 'the' (hebrew 'ha') never preceeds proper names. Another book by this same name, called by many “Pseudo-Jasher,” while written in Hebrew, is also not the “Book of Jasher” mentioned in Scripture.

I gave the book 4 stars not because it was factually inaccurate (on the contrary, the names, places, etc., are rather in step with the Bible), but because there are some accounts that are inconsistent with Scripture and can't be reconciled /5().

This book is a reprint of an anonymous translation of the Hebrew manuscript purported to be the ancient Book of Jasher, referred to in Joshua and 2 Samuel as a source. Sections of this read like they could have been the real Book of Jasher, but parts of it read like a later recounting of some stories in the canonical texts/5.
